long run and stupid dog

Must say this one started rough. Legs were tired from yesterday. It took couple of miles to warm up.  Other than first couple of miles run felt pretty good and fluid. Knee actually felt OK. Minor incident around mile 13, there was some dude with a little dog walking in opposite direction. He made no attempt to shorten the leash and keep the dog from jumping on me. As I came by dog jumped and my knee (the bad one) hit the dog in the head…I wish people would understand that there is certain lack of agility when we run long…keep your dogs away as I will not attempt to jump around to avoid a dog and injure myself…sorry…

Hard time getting my sugars under control today (or should I say high enough), took readings between 60 and 84…gels did nothing…no major issues though but wish it was bit higher to be on a safe side.

Therapeutic 6:46 pace

This seems rather bizarre. My knee was hurting last night and this morning. It also was hurting when I started my run. Magically, as I picked up the pace the pain went away and it did not come back until I was done with the run. I guess that is the cure…run faster…

Run - 0.7 hours - 02/05/2010

Nice run, temps in 30’s. Left knee is still causing some problems, seems like this will be pain of choice for this marathon build up.

Attempt at tempo run

Another day of having zero motivation and annoying knee pain. Initially I was going to scrap tempo run but have changed my mind after 1st mile. I am not sure how beneficial it was anyway…

and some more stuggle

Another tough one…complete lack of motivation. Must be that time of year. I was hoping I feel better after 2 days off from running but did not happen.

another rough one

Yet another run where my whole body just felt disjointed. I planned to run this slower but halfway through I picked up the pace for the sake of getting it done. Day off is tomorrow and hopefully better week coming up. I am not sure what my problem is or how to fix it so the best I can do is hope for something to change. On positive not closing January with some solid miles and I am 95% on track for my Boston plan (mileage wise that is, I cut out most speed work so that is lacking).

The Mill

Got lazy today and did not feel like putting all the layers to brave the cold so I chickened out and hit the mill at the gym. Warm-up followed by middle 2 miles at 6:30, cool down the last 2.

Different perspective

So I was talking to friend last night and he asked me about my running. Now, let me just say that this guy considers walking across a parking lot exercise. I am saying this just to illustrate where he is coming from…certainly little different perspective.

Since he asked, I happened to mention my little knee problem and his response was that I always complain about some type of ache or pain. Without even thinking I responded that most runners deal with aches and pains on frequent basis. After all, most runners I know have some issue pop every once in a while. This friend of mine then asked me why don’t I just take a week or two off…seemingly simple question but I could not come up with a reasonable answer. Why do we run through aches and pains? Sure, we could take some time off but we choose to run through it and probably prolong the time to recovery. I like to say it is because of love for the sport but I think there is more to it. There is some level of addiction to running…but is it maybe the guilt of skipping workout? Fear of loosing conditioning? Maybe fear of not reaching our goals and disappointing ourselves?

The list goes on and I still cannot say why…maybe it is all of the above?

Today got lot colder and winds still pretty strong and frigid. Knee actually felt better. Still keeping it slow this week, no hill repeats for tomorrow.

Slowing down

Recovery from the weekend is going well. Just some minor issues with that virus during run today…I prevailed yet again…

Another issue that’s causing me some grief is my left knee that seems to get better for a day or two and than gets bad again. I am at the point of getting little concerned about it and will try to take steps to fix it… that means run slower for a week or two and cut speed work out of the plan…hope that works.

It is getting cold again after rather nice weekend. Had to fight some 20mph west freezing winds again. I thought that I was having it bad until I noticed a guy on the freeway heading west on the motorcycle. If my math is correct he was probably going 70mph with 20mph wind from opposite direction. This makes it about 90mph.  At least running generates heat…sitting on the motorcycle…not so much.
