Race??? No, it is not…it’s all in my head

Here is a true testament of how lost and confused I currently am. See, the next 5-6 weeks are supposed to be maintenance before ramping up for Boston. One problem with maintenance is that I set the weekly mileage goal and that’s about it…so, why is that a problem? The issue here is that there is no structure to training…no easy runs, no long runs, no speed work etc.
What happens is exactly what happened today…what was supposed to be an easy run to keep injury at bay and maintain the base turns out in an outright race…potential recipe for disaster when no proper planning was done.
First half (5 miles) I did good at about 7:45 min/mile and than this little devil on my left shoulder said “Can you Finish this under 1:10” or to be exact at 6:15 min/mile for 2nd half?”
So here we go, race is on…I pushed and ran at 6:05 and made it with 50 seconds to spare. Needles to say, I feel very sore now…this was stupid!!!
I desperately need a plan soon so that next time I can turn toward my left shoulder and say, “thanks, but NO thanks, I’ve got a plan to follow”

  1. Could you pretend and make yourself an on paper plan so that you have a “guide” since you need one! Don’t get crazy now!
